Thermo-Auricular Therapy
Ear candling (also known as thermo-auricular therapy) is a complementary therapy that aims to help symptoms associated with the ear, nose and throat.

It involves placing a hollow, cone-shaped tube (or ‘candle’) into the ear canal. This stimulates the ear and is believed to facilitate the removal of excess wax and impurities. Ear candling can promote deep relaxation and helps to relieve stress and revitalise the body.

Ear candle treatment uses long, hollow ‘candles’ which are made of organic cotton and a selection of natural ingredients such as honey extracts, crushed herbs and beeswax. This is believed to draw out wax and other debris that may be lodged in the ear canal.
The removal of excess wax and impurities helps to clear the inner ear and sinuses, regulates ear pressure and brings about a lighter sensation in the head and ears. Ear candling also encourages deep relaxation, which is enhanced by the infusion of herbs and essential oils.

This is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis. However the practice reached the modern world via the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona.

What happens during the treatment?
Following a thorough consultation the ears are examined through an otoscope to check that there is no perforation or ear infection which would prohibit treatment. Lying sideways on a coach the candle is gently placed a little into the ear and lit, allowing the flame to pass down the candle’s hollow centre. The warm air comes into contact with colder air, creating a ‘chimney effect’. The flame of the candle creates a vacuum, which can pull wax and other particles of debris out of the ear. Slight under pressure inside the ear candle and a vibration of the rising air column through the natural movement of the flame serve to gently massage the eardrum. This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is a soothing sensation and c Jacqueline uses BIOSUN candles which are 100% safe, hand-made on the basis of an old original recipe using natural ingredients – Honey, Pure Beeswax and crushed traditional Indian medicinal herbs mainly Sage, Camomile and St John’s Wort. The treatment process involves burning the candles one at a time followed by a gentle ear massage and some Reiki.

Caution:
Ear candling is not suitable for people who have a perforated eardrum, grommets, acute infection of the ear or the surrounding areas.
